Mamquam been hovering around 3 on the gauge, doable, but nothing special.

Hi Christian,

Couple of the guys did the Squamish Play Run a week or so ago, reported on the low side but views were great, no problem on the road. Cheak is low but runnable, will drop lower with the colder weather we have now.

Still in skiing mode up hear although the pool sessions are going well.

Let me know if your planning on coming up although we have Paralympics tickets for the next two weekends.

Best Wishes,

Dave

The mamcam is back up http://www.vankayak.org/mamcam/ . It had been isolated from the network during the transition from Epcor to Capital Power (not the fault of either of these companies).

Hey
My wife and I are moving to Squamish at the end of the month. Wondering when your next pool session is so we can meet some of the local paddlers and start to feel at home.

How do people read any numbers off of that photo of the gauge??

I hear that 3ish is very low but runnable for the lower Mamquam, and that 8ish is low for the upper run (i.e., about 35 on the old stick gauge under the bridge at the creek) - but I can't read any numbers.

I guess we'll just learn to ballpark the levels based on what the gauge & rock look like in the photo?

Great job getting the camera back up Keith! Thanks for your efforts.

Tyson... Welcome to Squamish, Next SPC pool session this saturday 8PM Brennan Park Pool, check us out at www.squamishpaddlingclub.com Hope to see you there.

yboat... yeah a 3 is almost bare minimum for paddling, though I've bumped along at less these last few months.  Dont have any experience with the upper run so couldnt comment. Theres others out there that should be able to educate us.
I hear that Keith is planning on superimposing a scale on the video feed to make it more readible.

The plan is to superimpose a scale a/p CapCam. The problem is that the camera is a long way from the gauge (further than I planned). The cost of getting enough resolution (either optically or in camera resolution) was prohibitive, never mind that with the lens we are using, we appear to see the building move with night to day temperatures! In the interim, something being better than nothing, half way up the rock is a "good" level. Technically, this camera is a lot more complicated than the capcam and, thanks to Capital Power, costs a lot less!

Just a further comment. The camera is on a timer so it starts about 8 AM and the last picture will be about 7 PM. The idea is to enable trip planning not real time browsing. Sort of the same as the Capcam (which depends on when the power is turned on at the hatchery). This was to enable a hard reset everyday after an early lock-up problem and satisfy a CP concern about bandwidth usage (the power plant has limited internet connectivity) which also is the reason for a 10 minute update. As I said, there are a number of technical issues!

Also the camera resolution is about 10X that of the Cap cam!

You should also be aware that, in addition to funding the camera and facilitating its installation, Capital Power has a considerable man-hour input into this project as does John Harvey et al and Phil.

Half way up a rock is good enough for me, we'll learn.  It's a way better view of the Mamquam than I've previously had from East Van!

Thanks all for the work!

Needs to be around 8 on the gauge for the Upper Run to be in and the short Middle run around 5 would still be runnable.

Just checking in again after the recent trip report from the low-water beginner's run on the Mamquam...

If the stick gauge on the Mam Cam is only "2" tall, what are we talking about here when we said a level of "8" - does that mean 0.8 in terms of how it's been reported recently - which would be something like half way up the rock?

Just want to make sure we're using the same language, or not talking about different gauges!

Thanks, Pat.

Pat,

The stick you see on the MamCam has markings, you can't make them out from the photo, I think the highest is 12? I'll take a look tomorrow as I'll be down there. The Mamcam guage is just downstream of the Dam and is easily visible from the trail just below the Dam put in.

So as you can imagine 2 is very low and 8 is pretty high, not for beginners anyway. At 8 it is about right to think of running the Upper Mamquam which needs to be high as it doesn't have Skookum Creek flowing into it until the take out.

The middle section (starts from the take out for the Upper run) needs to be at around 5 for a nice easy level, my favourite section too bad it's so short.

Cheers,

Dave

The MamCAm gauge is 2m ( I bought the sections! Which are standard staff sections.)  Lets not start the foolishness of dropping the first digit. Please add 0 to Dave's comments and divide his number by 10. I preferr colours which give an indication of the difficulty to numbers ( How silly is "0.835 is optimal"?!)

As of now there is no correlation with the upper staff gauge at the 8 KM bridge. There is also a broken-off staff gauge in the middle of the river which has no correlation that I know of.
