VKC Training Overview

There are four levels of training with the Vancouver Kayak Club. We offer whitewater kayaking courses to both beginner and experienced paddlers. Our beginner courses run throughout the fall, winter, and spring. The VKC pool sessions are the perfect place to practice all sorts of paddling skills while having fun training and socializing with each other on a regular basis. In the spring, we run weekly moving water training sessions on the Capilano River. Our trip schedule provides paddlers of all abilities the opportunity to explore some excellent rivers while developing river running skills and progressing in the sport of whitewater kayaking.

Please read this waiver through before attending as you will be required to sign it in order to take part: http://www.vankayak.org/docs/vkc-trip-waiver.pdf Our second course this winter will run on Jan 22/29/Feb5. (the 22th is a pool session for practice)

We had a great beginner course run this fall. Email training@vankayak.org to be added to the mailing list for the winter courses. Also please check out our forum for up to date information at (http://www.vankayak.org/forum/). If you can't wait that long check out our links page for other organizations running similar courses. If you have kayaked a bit before check out our Capilano River Sessions for other training opportunities below.

River Prep Course

This course is designed for graduates of the beginner pool course and we would recommend that you have taken a course/attended a session with us prior to signing up for this course. Sessions in the pool will hone technique and build confidence before heading out to the river. The river session will be based on one rapid, learning how to kayak in the moving water and a small river run paddling a section of a suitable river in either North Vancouver, Squamish or Chilliwack (dependant on water levels).

Participants will need to be responsible for providing some of their own gear for the river sessions. The club will provide a kayak, paddle and spraydeck. We also hope to be able to provide a PFD (personnel floatation device) and helmet. If this gear is not available (depends on sizes/club members lending gear) then it can be rented. Course participants will need to be prepared to rent and buy other gear in order to be suitably dressed for the river. Examples of gear that you will need to purchase are, wetsuit boots, gloves/pogies/mits and a skull cap(neoprene hat to wear under your helmet). Examples of gear that you can either purchase or rent are wetsuits or drysuits. You will also need to wear suitable underlayers to keep warm. We will help course participants out as much as we can but ultimately it is your responsibility to be appropriately geared up.

Course Cost: $125 – not including rented gear, meals or transportation (students are encouraged to carpool.) (You are required to be a member to take this course and this is not included in the course price - individual memberships cost $30).

This years course dates have just been announced. We will be running the course March 4/11/18. The 4th is a review pool session from 7-9 pm at Templeton pool in Vancouver. The 11th and 18th will take place during the day on a to be determined river depending on water levels. Please allow a full day (8am-5pm) for these days. Time varies depending on location. If you can't wait until then check our links page for other organizations running similar courses or come down to our Capilano Sessions - details below.
